Mixing fundamentals

Controlled movement for a defined process result.

An industrial agitator converts drive power into fluid motion through a selected impeller. The system is configured around fluid properties, vessel geometry, liquid level and the result required—blending, suspension, gas dispersion, reaction support or heat-transfer circulation.

  • HomogenisationReduce concentration and temperature gradients
  • SuspensionKeep suitable solids distributed through the batch
  • Gas dispersionPromote controlled gas–liquid contact
  • Heat transferImprove circulation across the transfer surface
Drive train

Power is selected from the real mixing duty.

The motor, gearbox, shaft and support arrangement are considered as an integrated mechanical system. Required power and torque depend on the process medium, impeller geometry, operating speed and number of mixing stages.

Impeller hydraulics

Flow patterns of agitator impellers.

The dominant circulation direction influences mixing time, suspension, shear and vessel turnover. Selection is made against the required process result.

Axial flow pattern diagram01 / Vertical circulation
Axial flow

Top-to-bottom vessel turnover.

Axial impellers move fluid substantially parallel to the shaft. They are commonly considered for blending, solids suspension and heat-transfer circulation where strong vertical movement and efficient bulk turnover are required.

  • High circulation
  • Low-to-moderate shear
  • Bulk blending duties
Radial flow pattern diagram02 / Wall-directed flow
Radial flow

Energy directed across the vessel.

Radial impellers discharge fluid approximately perpendicular to the shaft, creating circulation loops above and below the impeller. Baffles are normally considered to control swirling and improve useful mixing.

  • Higher local shear
  • Gas and dispersion duties
  • Baffle coordination
Tangential flow pattern diagram03 / Rotational movement
Tangential flow

Circular motion around the shaft.

Tangential movement follows the vessel circumference and can produce bulk rotation with limited vertical exchange. Vessel geometry, clearances and baffle strategy are reviewed to avoid an ineffective vortex-dominated pattern.

  • Circumferential motion
  • Low vertical turnover
  • Geometry-sensitive selection
